As large-scale renewable energy projects expand rapidly across the Global South, local populations are increasingly hosting projects that shape their land, livelihoods, and futures.

This transition is raising critical questions about whether consultation, consent, and community benefits alone are enough. How can renewable energy projects move beyond these approaches towards more meaningful forms of authority, participation, and accountability? And, in this context, what does community ownership mean in practice?

This webinar brings together practitioners, community-based organisations, researchers, and industry leaders to explore the tensions, trade-offs, and lessons emerging across different Global South contexts.

The session will also launch a new set of tools and resources developed by the Responsible Energy Initiative at Forum for the Future, in partnership with the JustRE Alliance for the Global South. These include:

a diagnostic taxonomy for understanding how community decision-making authority is exercised across the lifecycle of renewable energy projects, from site selection through to decommissioning; it draws on real cases from Kenya, Colombia, Argentina, South Africa and beyond to offer a common language for understanding the full spectrum of how authority can be held, distributed, and protected

an industry brief exploring the practical and commercial case for community ownership models, with guidance on applying the taxonomy to existing portfolios and new project design; and

a collection of case stories from across the Global South examining how these dynamics play out in practice.

The webinar is intended as an open and interactive conversation, and we warmly welcome questions, reflections, and participation from developers, investors, policymakers, civil society organisations, community advocates, researchers, and practitioners working on the just energy transition.
