Powerful Futures: Practitioner Insights on the Just Transition to Renewable Energy

User reading the Powerful Futures cover book from the IPad

A guide by practitioners for practitioners who are committed to ensuring that the global shift to renewable energy is equitable and inclusive.

This book is the first product of JustRE. As the pace of renewable energy deployment intensifies, the need to focus on justice is more critical than ever. The book gathers the expertise and experiences of organisations and initiatives from Latin America, Africa, and South and Southeast Asia dedicated to championing social responsibility in renewable energy projects.

This book explores the complexities of making renewable energy transitions just and equitable, drawing on real-world experiences from regions deeply engaged in these efforts. We address multifaceted justice issues throughout the lifecycle of renewable energy projects, aiming to equip practitioners with insights and tools to navigate the transition’s challenges and opportunities.

We offer a unique perspective on the challenges and opportunities of renewable energy development, focusing on the experiences of Latin America, Africa, and South and Southeast Asia.

We explore key themes including responsible land and water management, responsible supply chains, effective community engagement, and fair benefit-sharing mechanisms. We also address the importance of multistakeholder governance, emphasising the need for collaboration between public institutions, the private sector, and communities to achieve shared goals.

Our aim is not to present theoretical discussions but to offer a practical resource to inspire and guide practitioners in their work. Each chapter offers actionable lessons drawn from practical experience and several case studies. By sharing our experience in Colombia, India, Kenya, Mexico, the Philippines, and South Africa, we hope to contribute to the global conversation on renewable energy and justice, offering a Global South perspective that is often underrepresented in these discussions.

BookSprint Writing Retreat

The JustRE Alliance gathered in person for the first time in June 2024 in Ağva, Istanbul, Türkiye, to document practical experiences to guide practitioners in inclusive renewable energy deployment.

Twelve practitioner experts spent five days in a writing process facilitated by Book Sprints. The first day was filled with productive brainstorming and collaborative discussions on the book’s content. Thereafter, a writing and editing process of four packed days allowed for documenting the practical lessons and promising examples from the respective contexts.

The book Powerful Futures: Practitioner Insights on the Just Transition to Renewable Energy resulted from this experience.

and work together for a just transition.

The book is now complete and available for download. It’s written by practitioners for practitioners, especially those working in an intermediary capacity on utility-scale renewable energy projects.

By sharing insights and experiences from local initiatives, fostering international collaboration, and highlighting the global impact of these efforts, the Alliance demonstrates that a just and equitable deployment of renewable energy is possible and desirable for all. Through documented collective efforts, practitioners can find some of the tools and inspiration needed to drive meaningful change.
