SEI, a partner of the JustRE Alliance, is leading this project to assess the role of risk mitigation in renewable energy investments in sub-Saharan Africa.

Investments in renewable energy are crucial for achieving Sustainable Development Goals in sub-Saharan Africa, yet the region attracts less than 1% of global renewable energy financing. This research explores the effectiveness of financial risk mitigation tools—such as guarantees and political risk insurance—in unlocking private investment. It aims to provide best practices and actionable recommendations to accelerate clean energy deployment by analysing project-level data and stakeholder perspectives.
