Webinar Recap: Launching JustRE’s “Powerful Futures” to Champion a Just Energy Transition

On October 8th, 2024, the JustRE team hosted a webinar to present our new book, Powerful Futures: Practitioner Insights on the Just Transition to Renewable Energy. Powerful Futures: Practitioner Insights on the Just Transition to Renewable Energy The event brought together practitioners, experts, and enthusiasts from across the globe to discuss one of the most critical challenges of our time: achieving a just and equitable renewable energy future. The webinar also marked the official launch and first public event of the JustRE Alliance.

A Book to Inspire Action

Powerful Futures is a guide by practitioners for practitioners who are committed to ensuring that the global shift to renewable energy is equitable and inclusive. This book is the first product of the Global South Alliance for a Just Transition to Renewable Energy (JustRE). The book gathers the expertise and experiences of organisations and initiatives from Latin America, Africa, and South and Southeast Asia dedicated to championing social responsibility in renewable energy projects.

Expert Voices

The webinar consisted of a presentation of the book, but most importantly, a panel of guest experts that brought a wealth of knowledge to the table:

Dzunani Makgopa (South Africa)

CFO and Acting Head of Economic Development at the IPP Office, Dzunani shared her insights on aligning renewable energy initiatives with South Africa’s national development goals. Her emphasis on infrastructure development and broadening economic ownership underscored the importance of community-centric approaches in energy transitions.

Dr. Akanksha Tyagi (India)

Programme Lead at CEEW, Dr. Tyagi highlighted the critical role of circular energy technologies and the green jobs economy. Her call to integrate social and environmental responsibility into every stage of renewable energy deployment was both inspiring and actionable.

Juan Dumas (Argentina)

Co-Founder of Meliquina, Juan introduced innovative ownership models where local communities are shareholders in renewable energy projects. His experiences in policy dialogue and consensus-building showcased the transformative potential of community empowerment in Latin America.

These guest speakers were joined by JustRE team members and co-authors of Powerful Futures: Holle Linnea Wlokas (INSPIRE), Anna Biswas (Forum for the Future), and José Vega Araujo (SEI). Together, they engaged in a dynamic discussion on the challenges and opportunities in achieving just energy transitions.
